Why Avocado?
The advertised price isn't always the price you pay.
Electricity shopping is confusing for a reason. What you actually pay depends on several moving parts. Avocado calculates each plan from its pricing details at your usage and tells you the catch, in plain English.
- Your usage
- Advertised prices are averages at exactly 500, 1,000 or 2,000 kWh. Your real usage is rarely one of those.
- Bill credits
- Some plans take money off only when usage lands in a range. Use a little less and the discount can vanish.
- Delivery charges
- Your local utility adds its own monthly and per-kWh charges on top of the provider’s energy price.
- Contract terms
- Term length, rate type and cancellation fees all change what a plan really costs you over time.
One kWh can change the bill by about $100.
999 kWh

15.1¢ per kWh
1,000 kWh

5.1¢ per kWh
This demo plan gives a $100 credit at 1,000 kWh or more. Just below that, the credit disappears. Figures are illustrative, calculated by our pricing engine from fictional rates, and exclude taxes.
FAQs
Good questions.
Is Avocado an electricity provider?
No. Avocado is not an electricity provider or a utility. We help you compare plans, and you enroll directly with the provider you choose.
Do I need to share personal information to shop?
No. You can explore and compare without giving your name, email, phone number, date of birth, SSN or payment details. Providers handle those during enrollment.
How do you estimate my bill?
We calculate each plan from its pricing details — energy charges, base fees, delivery charges, bill credits and minimum-usage fees — at your expected usage. Estimates exclude taxes and aren’t guaranteed bills.
Can everyone in Texas choose their electricity provider?
Not everyone. Retail choice depends on the utility serving your specific address. Some cities and co-ops don’t participate, so availability must be confirmed for your address.
Are the plans on this site real?
Not yet. This prototype uses clearly labeled fictional demo plans. Pricing, availability and eligibility must be verified with the provider before enrolling.
How does Avocado make money?
Avocado may receive compensation from providers in the future. Any compensation arrangements will be disclosed on our compensation disclosure page.
